Jacket Styles

Tuxedo: The most common, especially among prom kids, and can be worn at any event requiring formal or semi formal attire.

Full dress (tails or tailcoat): The jacket is cropped in front, with two tails in the back. From the front it appears like the lapels stop higher than a tuxedo jacket. This style is not as common among the younger crowds. When it is used it is typically by grooms, and those attending very very formal events.

Mandarin, (Nehru jacket or Mao jacket): The stand-up collar surrounds the neck with no lapel and is worn with a Mandarin-collar shirt.



Lapels

Notched lapel: Has a notch indention where the lapel joins the collar. This is traditionally the most popular.

Shawl collar: Has a rounded lapel with no notch.

Peaked lapel: Instead of a notch the lapel points up and out just below the collar.



Shirt Collars

Wing collar: A standup collar with downward pointing edges, the most used shirt for formal events.

Mandarin collar: A band collar, there are no wings or flaps. This is a style maker shirt.

Standard collar: Similar to a regular button shirt. This Shirt is most common with long ties.



Sleeve Cuffs

Standard: Sleeves fastened by cuff links.

French cuffs: Folded over at the edge and fastened with cuff links.



Ties

Bow tie: Is the traditional tie folded to form a bow. It comes in all colors. Grooms usually will wear a color different than there groomsmen.

Four in hand: This is a regular long tie and can be worn in both the wing and the standard shirt. Normally worn with the standard collar shirt.

Ascot tie (Cravat): A wide, formal tie fastened with a stickpin or tie tack.

Bolo tie: A western tie, this one is a thick string tie fastened at the neck.



Accessories

Backless Vests: Is buttoned in front and has an adjustable strap in the back by the waist.

Full-back Vests: Is buttoned in front and is completely covered in fabric. This is more of a comfortable feel and is becoming more popular. It has an adjustable function in the back.

Cummerbunds: Pleated fabric worn at the waist, without a vest.

Cuff links: Fasteners for your shirt cuff, typically silver and black.

Studs: Fasteners for your shirt. Most shirts come with buttons; these are to replace the buttons. Typically comes in silver and black.

Shoes: Black, white, or a combination. Normally these shoes have a shinny luster. Do not try to wear dress shoes with a tuxedo. The shine compliments the satin on the tuxedo.

Pocket Square: Also known as a handkerchief, these are worn in the pocket of your jacket. It usually will match the dates dress or your vest or cummerbund.
